چکیده

We present the design, fabrication and testing of the piece-wise stepped-chirp fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) with arbitrary group delay responses using a uniform phase mask under pre-stretched condition. The method involves writing a series of sub-gratings on a prestretched fiber whose length is varied during the UV exposure process. Two motorized stages are employed to control the length of the pre-stretched fiber in order to adjust the grating pitch at each writing step to achieve piece-wise stepped chirping of the FBG. Because the fiber is moved relatively to the phase mask, an apodized index modulation profile of the FBG can be obtained by fiber dithering. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the method to produce FBGs with arbitrary group delay responses, a linear-chirp unapodized FBG and a quadraticchirp apodized FBG were fabricated, and their experimental results agree well with the analytical predictions.

Fiber Bragg Gratings for In-line Dispersion Compensation in Cost-effective 10.7-Gbit/s Long-Haul Transmission

Among the promising new developments towards cost-effective long-haul transmission are chirped multi-channel Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG). In this paper we discuss the feasibility of long-haul WDM optical transmission using only FBGs for in-line dispersion compensation. We show successful transmission of 32x10.7-Gbit/s NRZ modulated channels over 3,800-km using low group delay ripple slope-matche...

<Edited by Milan Brandt and Erol Harvey> POINT BY POINT FEMTOSECOND LASER INSCRIPTION OF FIBRE AND WAVEGUIDE BRAGG GRATINGS FOR PHOTONIC DEVICE FABRICATION

We present a flexible and rapid method for the production of Bragg gratings in a range of optical waveguides such as optical fibres and direct laser-written waveguides in bulk media. Using a low repetition rate (1 kHz) femtosecond laser, Bragg grating structures can be written in a point-by-point fashion (where each laser pulse inscribes one period of the Bragg structure) in both passive and ac...

Analysis of Fiber Bragg Gratings for Dispersion Compensation in Reflective and Transmissive Geometries

Numerical analysis of the dispersion-compensating properties of fiber Bragg gratings (FBG’s) in both reflective and transmissive modes is presented. First, the sensitivity of chirped, reflective gratings to the grating chirp parameter, index modulation, and grating length is examined, showing that apodization provides lower sensitivity to variations in these parameters. Second, we introduce a n...

Using Genetic Algorithm for Parameter Reconstruction of a Chirped Fiber Bragg Grating

We propose a novel method for multiple parameters and phase reconstruction of a chirped Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) through two thermally-modulated reflection intensity spectra and genetic algorithm. Two temperature distributions are used to modulate the chirped FBG’s intensity spectrum in order to synthesize FBG’s parameters through a genetic algorithm. Thus, the phase response can be reconstruc...

Enhancing optical field intensities in Gaussian-profile fiber Bragg gratings.

Gaussian profile fiber Bragg gratings exhibit narrow-bandwidth transmission peaks with significant group delay at the edge of their photonic bandgap. We demonstrate group delays ranging from 0.2 to 5.6 ns from a 1.2 cm structure. Simulations suggest such a device would be capable of enhancing the field intensity of incoming light by a factor of 800. Enhancement is confirmed by photothermally in...
